New dinosaur species discovered in Australia declared the continent's largest

Australia, known for its bizarrely gigantic spiders and unnervingly large snakes may have been home to one of the largest dinosaurs to roam planet Earth, new research reveals.

A huge dinosaur discovered in “the Land Down Under” has now been identified as a new species by palaeontologists. The dinosaur, newly named as “Australotitan cooperensis” roamed the Earth about 100 million years ago and constituted the “titanosaur” family.

The first description of the species comes 15 years after its bones were uncovered in the country. Palaeontologists estimate that the species was 5-6.5 metres (16-21 feet) high and possessed a length of 25-30 metres (82-98 feet), making it the largest dinosaurs species found on the continent.

"Based on the preserved limb size comparisons, this new titanosaur is estimated to be in the top five largest in the world," Robyn Mackenzie, a director of the Eromanga Natural History Museum was quoted as saying by AFP.

The bones were discovered on Mackenzie’s family farm in 2006, situated 1,000 kilometres away from Brisbane in the Eromanga Basin. For a year, no details of the discovery were made public. But the skeleton went on public display in 2007.

But it wasn’t easy to get here. With over a decade spent on understanding the bone remains, scientists found it peculiarly difficult to ascertain the species of the dinosaur, until they found that it was a discovery of biblical proportions. Scott Hocknull, a palaeontologist at Queensland Museum, told AFP that the process of research had been a "very long and painstaking task".

The scientists used 3D scan models of bones to compare it with the remains of what may have been the species’ close relatives when dinosaurs walked the Earth.  This is not the first dinosaur skeleton to be found in this region. Many remains have been discovered in the area, and scientists believe that such groundbreaking findings are the tip of iceberg.

U.S. moves to tackle domestic terrorism

It has announced a national strategy that focuses on ‘prevention, interruption and dissuasion’

The U.S. government on Tuesday unveiled its “national strategy” to fight domestic terrorism, an issue that is a priority for President Joe Biden after the assault on Congress in January and the rise of white nationalist extremists.

“Domestic violent extremists motivated by a range of ideologies pose an elevated threat to our country in 2021,” a senior administration official told mediapersons, speaking on condition of anonymity.

“Racially or ethnically motivated violent extremists, and specifically those who espouse the superiority of the white race and anti-government militia violent extremists, [pose] the most lethal threat,” the official said.

The government’s plan is, however, “ideologically neutral” and consists of four pillars that focus on “prevention, interruption and dissuasion”, while preserving individual freedoms.

The Biden administration wants first to improve information sharing on extremist groups or individuals at the federal and local level. For this, the Justice Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation have set up a nationwide system for reporting terrorism-related cases.

The government also wants to thwart the recruitment of violent extremists and calls for violence in collaboration with large technology platforms and social media networks. Washington announced in May that it was joining the Christchurch Call, an international movement against the online dissemination of extremist content, which former president Donald Trump had refused to join.

The government will also improve the system for prosecuting extremists by recruiting analysts, investigators and prosecutors.

Mouse sperm stored on International Space Station produces healthy offspring

Solar flares from the surface of the Sun generate particles that can have particularly devastating impacts on human health and penetrate current generation spaceships.

Japanese researchers found mouse sperm exposed to high levels of cosmic radiation for nearly six years produced a large brood of healthy, unremarkable "space pups." Their study was published Friday in Science Advances.

The sperm was stored in the International Space Station in freeze-dried form. Once brought back to Earth and rehydrated, it resulted in the birth of 168 young, free of genetic defects.

Developmental biologist and lead author Teruhiko Wakayama told AFP on Thursday that there was little difference between mice fertilised by space sperm and sperm that had remained confined to our planet. "All pups had normal appearance," he said, and when researchers examined their genes "no abnormalities were found."

In 2013, Wakayama and colleagues at the University of Yamanashi in Japan launched three boxes, each containing 48 ampoules of freeze-dried sperm, to the ISS for the long-term study.

They wanted to determine whether long term exposure to radiation in space would damage DNA in reproductive cells or pass mutations along to offspring. That could be a problem for our own species in future space exploration and colonisation missions.

Batches were returned to Earth for fertilisation after the first nine months, then after two years, and finally after six years, leading to hundreds of births.

Freeze-dried sperm was selected for the experiment because it can be preserved at room temperature, rather than needing a freezer.

The ampoules were also small and very light, about the size of a small pencil, further cutting launch costs.

When the space mice reached adulthood, they were randomly mated and the next generation appeared normal as well.

Space colonies

Wakayama, now director for Advanced Biotechnology Center at the University of Yamanashi, told AFP he had been inspired by the science fiction of Heinlein and Asimov and once wanted to be an astronaut. Though he settled on becoming a scientist, the sense of wonder and whimsy about space exploration never left him.

"In the future, when the time comes to migrate to other planets, we will need to mantain the diversity of genetic resources, not only for humans but also for pets and domestic animals," Wakayama and colleagues wrote in their paper. "For cost and safety reasons, it is likely that stored germ cells will be transported by spaceships rather than by living animals."

Getting to other planets means leaving the safety of Earth's protective atmosphere and magnetic field — which also extends to the ISS, 400 kilometers above the surface.

World's first wooden satellite to be launched from New Zealand

The satellite, designed and built in Finland will orbit at around 500-600 km altitude in a roughly polar Sun-synchronous orbit.

Theropean Space Agency (ESA) has wanted to put the world's first wooden satellite, WISA Woodsat, on Earth's circle before the current year's over. The mission of the satellite is to test the materialness of wooden materials like compressed wood in rocket designs and open it to outrageous space conditions, like warmth, cold, vacuum and radiation, for an all-inclusive timeframe. 

It will be dispatched to space before the finish of 2021 with a Rocket Lab Electron rocket from the Mahia Peninsula dispatch complex in New Zealand. 

The satellite, planned and worked in Finland will circle at around 500-600 km elevation in a generally polar Sun-coordinated circle. WISA Woodsat is a 10x10x10 cm nano satellite developed from normalized boxes and surface boards produced using compressed wood, the very material that is found in a home improvement shop or to make furniture.

Planners have set the wood in a warm vacuum chamber to keep dry when its in space. They have additionally added a dainty aluminum oxide layer to limit fume coming from the wood and to shield it from erosive impacts of nuclear oxygen.
